Saturday Learning Sessions

What It Is

Free workshops for young people ages 10-17, running in 12-week cycles on Saturdays. The sessions are drop-in friendly, so youth can join at any point. We focus on kids in foster care and underserved communities, but registration is open to everyone.

What We Cover

Each cycle includes a rotating mix of workshops:

  • Book club - Guided reading and discussion
  • Financial literacy - Budgeting, saving, and planning basics
  • Art therapy - Creative expression as a tool for healing
  • Vision boards - Goal-setting and future planning
  • Dietary education - Nutrition and healthy habits
  • Yoga and SEL - Mindfulness, emotional regulation, and self-awareness
  • CPR and hair care - Practical life skills

The topics change because the kids' needs change. We have added new workshops based on volunteer expertise and youth feedback. If a volunteer shows up with a skill we have not covered before, we will build a session around it.

The sessions are designed for consistency. Running in 12-week cycles means kids build relationships with mentors and peers over time rather than showing up once and disappearing. But if someone can only come to a few sessions, that is fine too.

Where and When

Sessions are held at partner locations in Detroit, including the Jefferson-Detroit Public Library. Check our news page or email [email protected] for the current schedule.
